DMZ early access opens October 20 for digital pre-orders. What you can do in the three days before launch and what carries into the full game.
MW4 DMZ Early Access Guide
MW4 DMZ early access opens on October 20, 2026 for anyone who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the game, three days before the October 23 launch. It is the full DMZ mode rather than a slice of it, and it is a pre-order benefit, not a free trial: DMZ has never been announced as free-to-play, so you need to own the game to play it.
- Digital pre-orders and pre-purchases get in on all platforms; the physical console Standard Edition is not listed with early access.
- Campaign early access opens first, on October 16, so DMZ follows four days later.
- Weapon progression, DMZ Player Level, FOB unlocks and your Stash are the account-level things worth building early.
- The Vault Edition adds a third Active Duty slot on top of the standard two.
When DMZ Early Access Starts and Who Gets It
The DMZ window is October 20, a Tuesday, and it runs through to the global launch on Friday, October 23 at local midnight. The official blogs describe it as playing all of DMZ, so expect the full Hajin Exclusion Zone, the FOB, Orders and Operations rather than a limited map rotation.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| October 15, 09:00 PT | PC preload opens for pre-purchasers |
| October 16 | Campaign early access for digital pre-orders |
| October 20 | DMZ early access for digital pre-orders |
| October 23 | Global launch, local midnight |

Two details trip people up. First, early access wording is tied to digital pre-orders and pre-purchases, so a disc copy bought on launch day is not included. Second, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders were announced as opening later in 2026, so check the platform store before assuming early access applies there.
PC preload opens on October 15 at 09:00 PT, and the official PC tech specs blog covers the requirements you need to have ready by then.

Campaign early access is worth thinking about alongside this. It opens on October 16 for the same digital pre-order group, which means you can clear the campaign in the four days before DMZ unlocks and arrive at Hajin already knowing how the story ends. If you would rather avoid spoilers, note that Infinity Ward publicly asked players not to spoil the campaign before launch.
Do You Need to Buy the Game for DMZ?
Yes, as far as official material goes. Activision has never announced DMZ as a standalone free-to-play mode, and every official page describing DMZ treats it as part of Modern Warfare 4: the mode is listed alongside Campaign and Multiplayer in the product description, and early access is framed as a pre-order perk, which only makes sense if you own the game.
Two related questions usually follow.
- Game Pass: MW4 does not launch into Game Pass, which Activision confirmed in advance. A subscription alone will not get you into DMZ on day one, breaking a two-year pattern for the series.
- Cheaper than Vault: the Digital Standard Edition includes the full game and DMZ. The Vault Edition is the one that adds a third DMZ Active Duty slot and the DMZ Deployment Bonus. The official editions and pre-order blog lists exactly what each edition contains.
The official edition breakdown lists a DMZ Deployment Bonus for Vault Edition with details still to come. The items named so far are the Deployment Kit contents: Weapon Insurance Contracts x2, Operator Rescue Beacons x2, Fulton Drop Marker x2, Medium Backpacks x2 and 2-Plate Carriers x2. Treat anything beyond that list as unannounced.
What Carries Over From Early Access
The systems that carry across the account are the ones worth grinding in three days. Weapon progression is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, attachments unlock once and are shared across the whole arsenal, and camo progress advances across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. Each mode has three Mastery Camos of its own, nine in total.
On the DMZ side, your DMZ Player Level runs from 1 to 70 with unlocks at every level, and the FOB stations you open stay open: the 3D Printer at DMZ Level 2, the Vendor at level 5, the Gunsmith at level 10, the Dog Tag Case at level 20, and the Boss Board after your second DMZ Order. Recipes unlock when you extract the ingredients they need, and each first-time extraction that unlocks a recipe also pays 5,000 DMZ Cash. Weapon Manuals work the same way.
DMZ is built on persistent inventory, persistent Operators and a persistent Stash, and no reset at October 23 is described in the official Hajin deep dive. That said, Activision has not published an explicit no-wipe statement, so treat a late reset as unlikely rather than impossible.
What to Do With the Three-Day Head Start
A short window with the whole map open is a gift. Here is the order that pays off fastest.
- Reach DMZ Level 2 immediately. The 3D Printer is the single most useful FOB station, and early printable items include Bandage (Synthetics 15 + Chemicals 15), Medkit (Chemicals 30 + Binding Catalyst x1 + Biomaterials x5), 1-Plate Armor Vest (Synthetics 25 + Metals 25), 2-Plate Armor Vest (Synthetics 50 + Reactive Metals x5), Small Backpack (Synthetics 25 + Metals 25) and Medium Backpack (Synthetics 50 + Rigid Synthetics x5).
- Clear your first two DMZ Orders. The second one opens the Boss Board, which is how Lieutenant hunting starts.
- Learn the map while it is quiet. Thirteen major points of interest, more than 60 named locations and threat levels from Low to Extreme. Ranked by danger, the Citadel inside the 14th Political Prison, The Grid and the Nenshin Tech Complex are the places to avoid on day one.
- Bank DMZ Cash and grow your Stash. FOB upgrades bought at the 3D Printer raise the Bank cap and the Stash item and weapon capacity, and you want that headroom before the live population arrives.
- Test builds on the Firing Range. It sits next to the Gunsmith and Vendor and has targets from close range out past 100 meters.
- Extract Weapon Manuals. They are the unlock path for buying weapons in the Gunsmith rather than relying on scavenged guns.
If you would rather not spread yourself thin, pick one of two plans. Levelling plan: run fast low-threat loot routes, bank cash, and push DMZ Player Level toward 10 for the Gunsmith. Recon plan: ignore levels, walk the map, and learn the entrances and underground routes while nobody is watching the spawns. Both are worth more than a head start spent fighting over one high-threat POI.
What You Still Cannot Confirm
Some of the questions that drive the most searches have no official answer yet, and it is worth knowing which ones.
| Question | Status |
|---|---|
| Full contents of the Vault Edition DMZ Deployment Bonus | Not announced beyond the Deployment Kit list |
| Season 1 DMZ content | Season 1 starts November 6, 2026; content not announced |
| A second DMZ map | A map called XO1 appears in third-party reporting only, not confirmed by Activision |
| Download size per platform | Not published; official PC storage requirement is 115 GB on an SSD |
| Player count per DMZ match | Never announced |
FAQ
When does MW4 DMZ early access start?
October 20, 2026, three days before the October 23 launch. It is available to anyone who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the game, and the campaign early access window opens earlier on October 16.
Do I have to pre-order to play DMZ early?
Yes. Early access is a digital pre-order or pre-purchase benefit, so the only way in before October 23 is to own a digital copy in advance. The physical console Standard Edition is not listed with early access.
Is MW4 DMZ free to play?
No free-to-play version of DMZ has been announced. Official material presents DMZ as part of Modern Warfare 4, and since MW4 is not launching into Game Pass, you need to buy the game on your platform.
Does DMZ early access progress carry over to launch?
Nothing official describes a wipe, and DMZ is built around persistent Operators, a persistent Stash and account-level weapon progression, so plan on keeping what you earn. Just be aware that a no-wipe statement has never been published explicitly.
Can I play the whole DMZ map during early access?
The official wording is that pre-order players get access to all of DMZ from October 20, which means the full Hajin Exclusion Zone rather than a limited slice. Content that arrives later, such as Season 1 on November 6, is not part of it.
