Which Modern Warfare 4 weapons suit which range, how Gunny builds work, and a sensible first Create-a-Class loadout for each role.
Best MW4 Weapons and Loadouts
Modern Warfare 4 ships with 33 weapons at launch, split into 24 primary, 8 secondary and 1 melee, and the Open Beta only exposed 22 of them by name. That means the honest answer to "what is the best gun" is: pick by engagement range first, because that is the one variable you control, and let Gunny assemble a build from attachments you have already unlocked. Everything else is Beta guesswork.
The short version:
- Close range wants an SMG or the Rezi 12 shotgun, mid range wants an assault rifle, long range wants a marksman rifle or a sniper.
- Gunny gives three build directions per weapon: Short Range, Balanced and Long Range, and it evolves as you unlock more attachments.
- No official damage, RPM, ADS or recoil numbers exist for MW4, so nobody can rank the arsenal with real data yet.

Pick by engagement range, not by tier
Class roles in MW4 are conventional. Assault rifles are described as a dependable balance of damage, accuracy and handling. SMGs pair high mobility with rapid fire and fall off at distance. Shotguns and snipers trade follow-up speed for stopping power. Marksman rifles sit between ARs and snipers. Your first decision is simply which of those windows you actually fight in.
| Your fight | Class | Weapons confirmed so far |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 15 m | SMG | ISO Nightshade, PPSh-41, X-58 Nyx |
| 0 to 15 m | Shotgun | Rezi 12 |
| 15 to 40 m | Assault Rifle | Han 86, M4, Hyeon Burst, Kastov 762, Patriot XMR |
| 40 m plus | Marksman Rifle | MAR-9, Oris 8.6 |
| 40 m plus | Sniper Rifle | KG-7 Vulcan, Signal .50 |
| Backup | Pistol | Karit P68, .50 GS |
| Utility | Launcher / Melee | PILA, Combat Knife |
Two caveats on that table. The Axion assault rifle and the Sang 9mm pistol only appear inside a Default Loadout you can pick during Player Progression, and the WZ.55 Striga SMG is a campaign-mission-only weapon. The official guide says those three sit outside the normal levelling path.
The full launch arsenal of 33 weapons and the platform list are described on the official Modern Warfare 4 product page.

That same guide gives each weapon a one-line role rather than a stat block. The Han 86 is chambered in 5.56 with a high rate of fire and moderate damage. The M4 is fully automatic and described as highly adaptable. The Kastov 762 is 7.62x39 with heavy per-shot impact and equally firm recoil, so it rewards trigger discipline. The Patriot XMR is a Battle Rifle that hits hard at mid to long range when braced. None of that is a number, which is the point.
What Gunny actually does
Gunny is short for Gunnery Sergeant, and it is an optional weapon-build recommender that lives inside Create-a-Class. With a single input it cycles through builds tuned for close-range, balanced or long-range play, using only the attachments you have already unlocked. Infinity Ward states that every Gunny recommendation is hand-crafted by its developers, and that recommendations evolve as your arsenal grows.
It is a starting point, not a cage. Every build can be edited manually, and Gunny never locks you out of your own Gunsmith choices. For a new player the practical move is to generate a Balanced build on the day you unlock Create-a-Class, play three matches, then decide whether you want to bias the weapon toward speed or toward holding lanes.
Generate Short Range and Long Range builds for the same weapon and play one match with each. The difference tells you more about your own habits than any written ranking will.
A sensible first loadout for each role
These are starting points built from confirmed names only. Each one assumes you equip one Tactical, one Lethal and one Field Upgrade, plus three Perks.
Aggressive pusher. ISO Nightshade or PPSh-41 as primary, Karit P68 as a fast-swap backup, Trip Wire as the Lethal, Smoke Wall as the Field Upgrade. SMGs are explicitly built to overwhelm before the enemy reacts, so this setup leans into the class description rather than fighting it. Swap to the pistol instead of reloading when the fight is inside ten metres.
Mid-range flex. M4 or Han 86, .50 GS as backup, Trip Wire, Razor Wire. This is the loadout for players who do not know which lane they will end up in. Assault rifles are the class the official guide calls an excellent choice for almost any combat scenario, and Razor Wire lets you lock a doorway behind you when you move.
Objective anchor. MAR-9 or Signal .50, Karit P68, Razor Wire, Smoke Wall. You hold a Hardpoint or a Domination flag and you make other people walk into your sightline. The marksman and sniper classes reward players who consistently land precise shots, so do not pick this role if you tend to move first and aim second.
You can see the full class-by-class list with unlock levels on the MW4 weapons list, and the slot-by-slot layout on the Create-a-Class guide.
Do not build around Apex Attachments yet
Apex Attachments are the final reward for fully levelling a weapon. They do not consume a standard attachment slot and they change how a weapon behaves rather than adding incremental stats. A weapon like the Kastov 762 can be converted into a 5.45x39 platform or given an RF pulse jammer, and the M4 can be turned into a top-loading 5.7x28 carbine.
The trap is building your whole plan around an Apex unlock you have not earned. A weapon at level 40 with four good attachments will beat the same weapon at level 70 with a bad build every time. The Apex Attachments guide breaks down the confirmed list and what each conversion does.
Why no one can rank MW4 weapons before launch
Three reasons, and none of them are opinions.
First, no official numbers exist. Infinity Ward has not published damage, rate of fire, recoil or ADS figures for any MW4 weapon. Any list quoting "TTK 320 ms" or "recoil 12 percent" is inventing it.
Second, 11 of the 33 launch weapons were never named. The Beta exposed 22 by name and the remaining 11 were not announced, so a ranking of "all 33" is impossible by construction.
Third, balance moves. The Beta ran on a 22-weapon slice with 19 Apex Attachments, 15 Perks and 10 Killstreaks enabled, while launch carries 28 Apex Attachments, 18 Perks and 17 Killstreaks. Anything tuned against the smaller pool can change before the October 23 release.
If a list ranks weapons you cannot name, or quotes stats the official guide never printed, it is not data. Use it for class-level impressions and nothing finer.
What to unlock first
Follow the unlock order rather than a popularity list. The ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, FiNN LMG, MAR-9, KG-7 Vulcan, Karit P68, PILA and Combat Knife are available immediately in the Beta. The M4 arrives at player rank 9, the PPSh-41 at 11, the Oris 8.6 at 14, the Hyeon Burst at 18, the Kastov 762 at 21, the .50 GS at 23, the Patriot XMR at 25, the X-58 Nyx at 27 and the Signal .50 at 30.
Attachment unlocks are shared across the whole arsenal, so levelling one weapon does not trap you on it. Unlock an attachment once and every weapon that uses it can equip it, a streamlining rule confirmed in the official player progression guide. That is the real reason to level broadly instead of maining a single gun.
FAQ
What is the best weapon in Modern Warfare 4?
There is no defensible single answer before launch. The 33-weapon arsenal is only partly revealed, no damage or rate-of-fire figures are official, and balance will shift between the Beta slice and the October 23 launch build. Pick the class that matches the range you actually fight at, then refine with Gunny.
How many weapons does MW4 have at launch?
33 weapons: 24 primary, 8 secondary and 1 melee. The Open Beta made 22 of them playable, and the remaining 11 were not named by Infinity Ward.
Is Gunny worth using or should I build manually?
Use both. Gunny gives you a working build in one input using attachments you already own, and every recommendation stays editable. It is a strong starting point for new players and a fast way for experienced players to compare range profiles.
Do MW4 weapons have a tier list yet?
No. A tier list needs stats and a complete arsenal, and MW4 has neither publicly available. Class-level impressions from the Beta are the most you can rely on.
Which MW4 weapon should a new player unlock first?
Start with what is already unlocked, then add the M4 at rank 9 and the PPSh-41 at rank 11. Both cover the two ranges most fights happen at, and attachments you unlock on them carry over to the rest of the arsenal.
