Classic vs Regular Prestige, what each path resets, how weapon progression works, and where DMZ and Battle Pass levels fit in.
MW4 Prestige and Progression Guide
Modern Warfare 4 splits Prestige into two routes. Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress and pays you back with a higher XP multiplier and exclusive rewards. Regular Prestige sends you back to level 1 but keeps every unlock and Create-a-Class item you earned. Player levels cap at 55, DMZ runs its own track to level 70, and Season 1 begins on November 6.
- Player progression: level 1 to 55.
- DMZ progression: level 1 to 70, with its own unlocks and rewards.
- Weapon progression: a shared attachment pool plus a per-weapon level track.
- Battle Pass: Season 1 opens November 6, with more than 100 rewards on the full pass.
Classic vs Regular Prestige
The difference is what you give up. Classic Prestige is the traditional reset, and Regular Prestige is the version for players who do not want to lose their class setups.
| Classic Prestige | Regular Prestige | |
|---|---|---|
| Level unlocks | Reset | Kept |
| Create-a-Class progress | Reset | Kept |
| Reward angle | Higher XP multiplier, exclusive rewards, Prestige mastery chase | Subset rewards and milestone recognition |
Classic Prestige is aimed at players who want the long climb and the higher XP multiplier that comes with it. The official description frames it as a route toward Prestige mastery, which means repeated trips through the level curve rather than a one-time badge.
Regular Prestige takes you back to level 1 but preserves all of your level unlocks and Create-a-Class content. You still get rewards for the milestone, but you are not rebuilding your loadouts from scratch. For most players who play with a fixed set of classes, this is the path that does not interrupt the way they actually play.
Neither option touches your weapon levels. Weapon progression is a global system shared across Multiplayer and DMZ, so a Classic Prestige does not send your guns back to level one. The official material describes Classic as resetting level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress, and weapon progression sits outside that description.
Player level 55 and DMZ level 70
Two separate level tracks run at the same time, and they feed each other in one direction only.
The standard player track runs from level 1 to 55 and covers the usual unlocks: weapons, equipment, perks and Create-a-Class access. This is the track Prestige resets. The official player progression guide covers the unlock order within those 55 levels.
The DMZ track runs from level 1 to 70 and is entirely separate. It unlocks new FOB stations, upgrades, recipes, Operator slots, Bank capacity and other rewards. XP earned in the 1 to 70 DMZ track also contributes to your overall 1 to 55 track, so a long DMZ session is never wasted progression.
The reverse is not true. XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone does not contribute to your DMZ level. If you want DMZ unlocks, you have to deploy into Hajin.
One more detail favors DMZ players: DMZ XP counts even if you fail to extract. Dying on the way to the final exfil costs you loot, not progression. There is no XP penalty for a failed extraction, so a bad raid still moves the 1 to 70 track forward.
There is also a third progression layer inside DMZ. Each Active Duty Operator carries a Dog Tag with 18 levels of its own, spanning Steel to Onyx. That track is independent of both the 55 and the 70, and it is the one that grants Trait Points. The FOB guide covers how those points are spent and what DMZ Operator Prestige costs.
DMZ Operator Prestige consumes the weapons, Plate Carrier, Backpack and four printer ingredients you equip for it, along with the DMZ Cash. Empty anything you want to keep out of the Operator's Loadout before you confirm.
The official DMZ progression write-up is the source for the 1 to 70 track and the Operator Prestige requirements.
Weapon progression and Apex Attachments
Weapon progression is global, not per mode. Any weapon level you gain in Multiplayer counts in DMZ and the other way around, and attachments once unlocked stay unlocked across your entire arsenal.
That last point is the biggest quality-of-life change in the system. Each attachment is a Shared Attachment, meaning it unlocks once and is then available on every compatible weapon. If a weapon level would award an attachment you already own, you skip that level entirely with a Bonus Level Up. You never grind the same attachment twice.
Every weapon has its own level track. In the Beta build those caps ranged from 30 for the Combat Knife and 34 for the Karit P68 pistol up to 72 for the KG-7 Vulcan and 73 for the Signal .50. The community-facing number to remember is that the official FOB guide's own example, the M4, is shown as a long track rather than a short one: finishing a weapon is a project, not an evening.
Complete all of a weapon's levels and its Apex Attachment becomes available. Apex Attachments do not use one of your regular attachment slots and they change how a weapon behaves rather than adding a stat line. Launch content includes 28 Apex Attachments, with 19 available during the Beta, alongside more than 500 standard attachments.
A few exceptions are worth knowing before you plan a build. The Axion and the Sang 9mm have no Gunsmith and no Apex Attachment, and launchers come with no attachments or Apex Attachments at all. The WZ.55 Striga only appears in Campaign missions. Weapon Prestige also exists per weapon for players who want to keep pushing a favorite past its cap. The multiplayer systems deep dive covers the shared attachment design in full.

Create-a-Class includes Gunny, a one-click build recommender with Short Range, Balanced and Long Range presets. It evolves as you unlock more attachments and you can edit everything afterwards, which makes it a fast starting point for a weapon you have never touched.
Weapon Manuals in DMZ
The DMZ Gunsmith unlocks at level 10 and works on DMZ Cash rather than COD Points. You can add up to five attachments to a built weapon plus one Apex Attachment slot. Weapons you find in Hajin can carry up to eight attachment slots, which is why a lucky loot pull can outperform anything you can build.
Buying a base weapon is gated by a Weapon Manual. Find the manual for that weapon in the Exclusion Zone and extract with it, and you unlock the ability to purchase that weapon as often as you like. Until then, an extracted single-use weapon can still be upgraded, but if you lose it in a later deployment the weapon type stays locked.
The manual extraction also pays 5,000 DMZ Cash, the same rule that applies to crafting recipes. Weapon Blueprints work differently again: owning one gives you a single free use in the DMZ Gunsmith, and losing it costs you that instance permanently. Re-buying a blueprint you own is discounted compared to building the same gun from scratch, and Vault Edition owners get the same discounted return path on the Signature Weapon Collection blueprints.
Cosmetics are free to apply. Camo, charms, gun screens, decals and stickers do not cost DMZ Cash, so there is no reason to run a bare gun while you save.
Battle Pass and Season 1
Season 1 starts on November 6, 2026. That is the only detail Activision has confirmed about the season, so any content list you see is either speculation or region-specific marketing.
Official source: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 - the launch window, Season 1 date and Battle Pass structure come from the official product and blog material.
The full Battle Pass carries more than 100 rewards, spanning weapons, Operator skins, blueprints and COD Points. If you buy the BlackCell version of the pass you get 20 tier skips and 1,100 COD Points immediately, plus exclusive Operator and weapon blueprints and BlackCell variants of some pass content.
Ranked play has not been announced for Modern Warfare 4. Do not plan around a competitive ladder until Activision confirms one.
Battle Pass progression sits alongside the other tracks rather than replacing any of them. Player level 55, DMZ level 70, per-weapon levels and the Battle Pass all advance from normal play, and Season 1 only resets the pass, not your account progression.
FAQ
Does Classic Prestige reset weapon levels in MW4?
The official description covers level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress. Weapon progression is a global shared system across Multiplayer and DMZ, and it is not described as part of the Classic Prestige reset.
What is the max player level in Modern Warfare 4?
Level 55 on the standard player track. DMZ has a separate cap at level 70.
Does Multiplayer XP count toward DMZ levels?
No. XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone does not contribute to your DMZ level. DMZ XP does count toward your overall level 1 to 55 progress, so the benefit only runs one way.
Do Apex Attachments take up an attachment slot?
No. An Apex Attachment is a separate slot on top of your five regular attachments, available once you finish every level on that weapon.
When does Season 1 start in MW4?
November 6, 2026. Activision has not announced what Season 1 contains beyond the date.
