Every Modern Warfare 4 launch mode explained, from Hijack and Inflation to Collateral, Frontline and the Hardcore playlists.
All MW4 Multiplayer Modes at Launch
Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026 with 16 named Multiplayer modes and variants. Eight of them are respawn playlists, four are round-based or single-life, one is the new Ground War mode Combat Outpost, and two are classic Party Modes. Six modes ship with Hardcore variants, and Counter Attack is the only mode Activision has named without publishing any rules for it.
- Respawn Modes: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free for All, Counter Attack (New), Inflation (New), Hijack (New)
- Round-Based Tactical Modes: Search and Destroy, Gunfight, Gunfight 10v10
- Also joining the launch lineup: Collateral (5v5) and Frontline (6v6)
- Ground War: Combat Outpost (New), plus other large-scale modes that have not been named
- Party Modes: Gun Game, Drop Zone
Official source: Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta: Maps and Modes - the category names, quick intel and the Hardcore markers in this guide follow that official breakdown.
Activision also lists further large-scale mode names as unannounced, so the official Modern Warfare 4 hub and the Call of Duty blog index are where those reveals will land.

The Respawn Playlist in Detail
Respawn modes are unlimited-life, full Create a Class playlists. Domination asks you to capture and defend three objectives marked A, B and C, with teams switching sides once half the score limit is reached and the first team to 200 points winning. Hardpoint puts one scoring zone on the map that only needs a single teammate inside, rotates that zone to a new location every minute, and ends at 250 points.
Kill Confirmed is the mode where eliminations alone do not score: an enemy drops a Dog Tag, and only recovering it adds points, while picking up friendly tags denies the enemy. Free for All strips out teams entirely. Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed and Free for All are all described as first to reach the score limit, and the official guide does not publish those limits, so treat any specific number you see quoted elsewhere as unverified.
- One teammate inside the Hardpoint is enough to score, so a body parked on the zone is worth more than a second player holding a nearby angle.
- In Domination, halftime matters. A team that is 30 points behind at the side switch can still win the mode, because both teams must attack and defend from both halves of the map.
- In Kill Confirmed, leaving a tag on the floor is a decision, not a mistake. Denying the enemy a tag is worth as much as collecting one.
Domination's 200-point limit and Hardpoint's 250-point limit with one-minute rotations are the only score numbers Activision publishes in the Open Beta mode guide. For Team Deathmatch and Kill Confirmed the guide says first to the score limit without giving the limit, which is the honest answer if a squadmate quotes a value you cannot find in the game.
Hijack and Inflation: What the New Modes Ask You to Do
Hijack is a 6v6 mode built around a single Data Spike in the central area of the map. You carry it, throw it, or pass it to a teammate while pushing toward the enemy Comm Station; planting it generates points over time and pays a bonus when it detonates. The defender job is to defuse before that happens.
The detail that changes how you build a class: while carrying the Spike, the Lethal input throws the Spike instead, so the carrier cannot deploy a Lethal at all. That makes the surrounding squad's equipment and Killstreaks the tools that clear routes and hold the Comm Station after the plant. If a Data Spike sits still, the enemy has time to regroup, so keep it moving.
Inflation is a 6v6 cash mode. Every elimination drops cash that either team can pick up, and the richest players become marked High Value Targets whose position is revealed to everyone. Overtime raises the cash multipliers, which is where a match usually swings. Nobody's exact HVT threshold is published, so the practical rule is simpler: once you are clearly the richest player on your team, assume you are being hunted and play like it.
Round-Based and Single-Life Modes
Search and Destroy is the anchor here: attackers alternate with defenders across two bomb sites, each player gets one life per round, teams switch sides every round, and attackers win either by eliminating the defenders or detonating, while defenders win by wiping the attackers, stopping the plant, or defusing.
Collateral is the new 5v5 mode built on the same skeleton, and it is the strictest mode at launch. You earn in-match cash from kills and objective play and buy from a limited selection each round, and because it is single life you lose your entire loadout when you die. Respawns, Killstreaks, automatic health regeneration and custom loadouts are all disabled, so what you buy is what you fight with: armor and perks like Armor Vest, Battle Hardened, Lethal Reach, Fast Hands and Ghost; equipment such as Flash, Molotov, Frag, Stim, Smoke Wall and Riot Shield; pistol and primary weapon packages, and a Team Buy UAV.
Frontline is the odd entry in this group. It is a respawn mode, not a single-life mode: both teams always deploy from their own base, and eliminations score more when the kill happens outside the enemy base, which pushes teams to advance instead of camping the spawn line. Activision announced it alongside Collateral as part of the launch lineup.

Ground War, Party Modes and Hardcore
Ground War brings Combat Outpost at 24v24, where captured Outposts generate a steady stream of points and become additional spawn locations, and reinforcing them unlocks escalating team rewards from Local UAV coverage up to a Light Tank delivered to your Headquarters. The same official list adds "other modes" for Ground War without naming them, so expect more large-scale playlists but do not quote a name yet. The Combat Outpost guide breaks down the Reinforce tiers and both map routes.
Party Modes launch with two franchise classics, Gun Game and Drop Zone, and Activision says additional modes are coming shortly after release. There is no ranked or competitive playlist announced for MW4 at launch.
Counter Attack appears in the official respawn mode list, and that is the entire announcement. No rules, no scoring, no player count, and no map notes have been published. Anyone describing how it scores is guessing until Activision says otherwise.
If you are deciding where to spend your first hours, the split is simple: Domination and Hardpoint teach map control, Kill Confirmed teaches discipline about ground you do not own, S&D and Collateral teach one-life decision making, and Kill Block Gunfight is the fastest way to learn every weapon because everyone gets the same gun. The full 12-map layout is in the multiplayer maps list.
FAQ
How many multiplayer modes does MW4 have at launch?
Sixteen modes and variants are named for launch: eight respawn modes, Search and Destroy plus Gunfight, Gunfight 10v10 and Collateral, Frontline, Combat Outpost, and the Gun Game and Drop Zone Party Modes. Activision has also listed additional unnamed Ground War modes.
Does MW4 have Hardcore mode at launch?
Yes, for six modes: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free for All and Search and Destroy. Activision marks exactly those with an asterisk in the official launch list. No Hardcore variant has been announced for Gunfight, Collateral, Frontline, the Party Modes or Combat Outpost.
What is Counter Attack in MW4?
Counter Attack is a new respawn mode that appears in the official launch list by name only. Activision has not published its rules, so there is no verified description of how it plays yet.
Is Gunfight 10v10 in MW4 at launch?
Yes. Gunfight 10v10 is an all-new variant that ships alongside the returning Gunfight and is played on Kill Block. The Gunfight guide covers the round structure, the Overtime Flag and the two-round Combo rotation.
Which MW4 modes are single-life?
Search and Destroy, Gunfight, Gunfight 10v10 and Collateral. Collateral is the harshest of the four because death also costs you the loadout you bought that round.
Does MW4 have ranked play?
No ranked or competitive playlist has been announced for launch. Activision has not published any details, so there is nothing to sign up for yet.
