Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer: Modes, Maps and Crossplay

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer went live on October 23, 2026 at local midnight on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2, and it arrives as the widest opening suite Infinity Ward has shipped: 12 new core 6v6 maps, 16 named modes, a reconfigurable Kill Block facility in place of a fixed Gunfight map, and Ground War rebuilt around a new objective mode called Combat Outpost.

  • 12 core 6v6 maps at launch, none of them remasters, six of them playable in the Open Beta.
  • 16 named modes, from Team Deathmatch and Hijack to Collateral, Gunfight 10v10 and Combat Outpost.
  • Kill Block hosts Gunfight on 500+ layouts the size of Modern Warfare (2019)'s Shoot House.
  • 33 weapons, 18 perks with Pick 3 back, 17 killstreaks, and no Ranked playlist announced.

What the Multiplayer Suite Contains at Launch

The launch build is not one playlist with a long tail of variants bolted on. It is four separate structures running on their own map pools, plus Party modes and Hardcore filtering on top.

Content At launch Detail
Core 6v6 maps 12 Spread across Korea, France, Mexico, India, the United States and an ex-Soviet industrial site
Ground War maps 2 Imjin Farmlands and Wolves Stadium, both set in Hajin
Kill Block 1 facility, 500+ layouts Slab combinations swap between rounds and matches
Modes 16 named Eight respawn, four round-based or single-life, Frontline, Combat Outpost, two Party modes
Weapons 33 24 primary, 8 secondary, 1 melee
Perks 18 Pick 3 is back; Ninja and Quick Fix return at launch
Killstreaks 17 Smartstreaks count objective play toward the streak

The 33-weapon figure is worth reading carefully. Twenty-two of them were available in the Beta, and Activision has not named the remaining eleven, so any list that fills those slots with guesses is inventing them. The MW4 weapons list tracks only what has been shown officially, and the 28 Apex Attachments sit outside the normal attachment budget because they unlock at max weapon level and change behaviour rather than stats.

The Map Pool You Are Actually Playing On

Every core map is new. Cachette, Coal, Lithium, Lotus, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92, Rooftops, Sentry, Silkworm and Transit 213 cover wildly different sightlines, from the tight Korean shopping district in Silkworm to the long industrial lanes of Coal. The screenshot at the top of this page is Transit 213, the overgrown bus depot in western India where wrecks double as hard cover and the centre lot becomes a shooting gallery for anyone holding height.

Six of those maps carried the Beta: Cachette, Lithium, Lotus, Rooftops, Silkworm and Transit 213. That matters for anyone coming back from the test weekends, because the other six were unseen until launch and none of the beta habits transfer cleanly. Full locations and layout notes live on the 12 launch maps breakdown.

The October update also adds Shipment to the core pool, which gives the rotation one deliberately tiny map for players who want pure chaos between the larger battlegrounds.

How the Mode List Is Split

Sixteen named modes sounds like a wall of options, but they collapse into four groups that ask very different things of you.

Group Modes What it asks of you
Respawn Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free for All, Counter Attack, Inflation, Hijack Map control and fast re-engagement; deaths cost time, not the round
Round-based and single-life Search and Destroy, Collateral, Gunfight, Gunfight 10v10 One life, one angle, one callout; economy matters in Collateral
Fixed-spawn Frontline Push from your own base and hold the line without flipping spawns
Large-scale Combat Outpost, plus further large modes Activision has not named Vehicles, capture points and reinforcement upgrades
Party Gun Game, Drop Zone Short, chaotic, no progression pressure

Hijack is the one to learn first among the new respawn modes. Two teams of six fight over a single Data Spike that can be carried, thrown or passed to a teammate, and planting it at the enemy Comm Station starts a steady score tick, with a bonus for detonating it. Carrying the spike takes over your lethal slot, so the person holding it is fighting with a thinner kit than everyone around them.

Inflation runs on cash instead of score. Every kill drops money, the richest player becomes the HVT and gets their position broadcast, and Overtime raises the cash multiplier so a losing team can still close the gap.

Counter Attack has a name and nothing else

Activision lists Counter Attack among the respawn modes but has not published its rules. Treat any guide that describes its objective or scoring as unverified until the official rules appear.

Collateral sits at the opposite end of the spectrum. It is a 5v5 mode built on Search and Destroy, with one life per round, no respawns, no killstreaks, no health regeneration and no custom loadouts. You buy armour, perks, equipment, pistols and a primary from a round economy instead, and dying costs you the whole kit. The full mode breakdown covers every playlist, including the six that ship with Hardcore variants: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free for All and Search and Destroy.

Kill Block: One Facility, Many Maps

Kill Block is the biggest structural change to small-team Call of Duty in years. The official name is the West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility, and it is not a single map: two End Slabs plus one Central Slab form a Combo, and the facility rotates Combos between matches and every two rounds in Gunfight. Eight concrete towers and a motorised sling lower slabs into an underground depot and raise the next configuration on new rails.

The result is 500+ layouts inside one installation roughly the size of Shoot House, and some slabs are deliberate callbacks: Crash from Call of Duty 4, Storage Town from Verdansk, Shoot House itself from Modern Warfare (2019). Gunfight and Gunfight 10v10 both run on it at launch, with more core modes planned.

Weather clears off your weapon on a reload

Kill Block cycles rain and snow, and the weather cuts visibility while icing up weapons or fogging optics. Switching weapons or reloading wipes it, so a mid-fight reload does more than refill the magazine.

The Kill Block guide breaks down slab calls and the Overtime Flag, and the Gunfight guide covers the shared-loadout rules, including the random loadout reset that lands every two rounds.

Ground War Now Means Combat Outpost

Ground War still means 24v24 with vehicles, but the launch mode is Combat Outpost, an objective mode rather than a straight capture-and-hold. Taking an Outpost gives steady score and turns the point into an extra spawn, which pushes your front line forward instead of leaving you cycling out of a distant base.

Holding ground unlocks the Reinforce chain: a Local UAV sweep, then a JLTV airdrop, then a light tank delivered straight to your HQ, with a twin-helicopter option in the mix. Two Hajin maps support it. Imjin Farmlands is flat and vehicle-friendly with a rice mill that owns the high ground, while Wolves Stadium funnels armour out of a bowl-shaped arena with ascenders, ladders and pipes for infantry. The Combat Outpost guide goes deeper on both.

Movement Changes You Will Feel in the First Match

The movement kit is shared across every mode, so it is worth learning once. Mantle Slide turns a vault into a slide, Mantle Momentum keeps your speed through it, and Mantle Steering lets you aim, turn or cancel mid-vault. Supine Slide is a double-tap crouch out of a sprint that finishes with your operator on their back, which is a genuinely different firing position from a standard slide.

Pipe Climb and Fast Pipe Slide handle vertical routes, Hang Shimmy and Hang Lean let you adjust on a ledge and aim around cover, and Climbing Jump lets you leave a ladder or pipe in any direction. The smaller change with the biggest effect on gunfights is partial reloading: most weapons keep a round in the chamber when you reload, the first time the series has done it, so the cost of a tactical reload is lower than it used to be.

Beta Versus Launch: What the Numbers Say

The Open Beta was a slice, and the launch build roughly doubles most of it.

System Open Beta Launch
Core 6v6 maps 6 12
Weapons 22 33
Perks 15 18
Killstreaks 10 17
Apex Attachments 19 28
Field Upgrades 9 11
Tacticals and Lethals 7 and 8 9 and 11

Two systems were also reworked around launch. Riot Shield moved from a permanent loadout pick to a timed field upgrade with durability, so it can be broken, and the new Bomb Glider killstreak is a player-piloted glide bomb with mouse-and-keyboard steering rather than a point-and-click strike.

Platforms, Crossplay and Game Pass in One Place

Platform Version Notes
Xbox Series X and S Native Play Anywhere with the Xbox on PC version
Xbox on PC Native Same purchase as the console version
PS5 Native No PS4 version
PC Steam and Battle.net 115 GB SSD storage, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot required
Switch 2 Native, built with Digital Legends First Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform in 13 years

Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch. Activision states plainly that players must buy the game separately to play in October, which breaks the day-one pattern of the recent Black Ops releases. Cross-platform squads are confirmed, but the full matching and input-based pool details have not been published, so nobody can tell you with authority how mixed lobbies are split. The Game Pass, crossplay and platforms page collects the official wording, and PC system requirements covers the TPM and Secure Boot checks that block a surprising number of installs.

Your First Week in Multiplayer

A sensible order beats grinding whatever playlist is first in the menu.

  1. Spend the first session in Team Deathmatch and Domination to unlock attachments on two or three weapons rather than spreading progress thin.
  2. Build one class in Create-a-Class with a close-range primary and one with something that holds a lane, then let the Gunny recommender propose a third.
  3. Move to Hardpoint or Kill Confirmed once the movement kit feels automatic, since both reward positioning over raw aim.
  4. Try Collateral and Gunfight in a group. Neither mode forgives a solo player who does not communicate.
  5. Pick a Prestige path before you hit the cap. Classic Prestige resets unlocks for a higher XP rate, Regular Prestige keeps everything and pays out in milestones, and the choice is permanent enough to plan for.

Weapon progress is shared across the arsenal, so every attachment you unlock is available on every gun in the same category, and Apex Attachments arrive at max weapon level without eating a slot. Camo progress runs across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone on the same weapon, with three Mastery camos per mode for nine in total, which the Mastery camo guide maps out in order. Season 1 begins on November 6, 2026, and Activision has not published its contents beyond that date.

FAQ

Is Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer crossplay?

Yes, cross-platform squads are confirmed across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2. Activision has not published how matchmaking splits mixed-input lobbies, so the exact rules are still officially undocumented.

How many multiplayer maps does Modern Warfare 4 have at launch?

Twelve core 6v6 maps ship on day one, all new. Ground War adds two Hajin maps, Imjin Farmlands and Wolves Stadium, and Gunfight runs on the Kill Block facility rather than a fixed map.

Does Modern Warfare 4 have Ranked play at launch?

No Ranked playlist has been announced. Activision has not published a competitive mode, a rank structure or a season schedule for one, so the launch multiplayer suite is casual and Party playlists only.

Is Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer on Game Pass?

No. Activision says the game must be purchased separately to play at launch and will not be included with Game Pass at launch, which is a break from how the recent Black Ops titles arrived on the service.

What is the difference between Kill Block and Gunfight?

Kill Block is the facility; Gunfight is a mode played inside it. Gunfight is round-based and fought with shared loadouts rather than custom classes, and Kill Block supplies the slab layouts it runs on, including the 10v10 variant and the Overtime Flag that appears when a round stalls.
