Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Missions and Rewards

Modern Warfare 4 has 16 campaign missions, and every one of them unlocks something for multiplayer or DMZ. Activision published the reward list in completion order, but it did not publish a mission-by-mission table, which is why most guides either repeat the names without the rewards or list rewards without saying where they come from. This page puts the two together, then adds the parts that are easy to walk past: collectible counts, safe and door codes, difficulty unlocks and the missions where a wrong turn costs you time.

The mission names and order below follow IGN's October 24 walkthrough. Activision lists the 16 rewards in completion order but does not attach them to mission names; the pairing below follows that order and matches the reward tables published by GameRant and GameSpot. Where a detail comes from a walkthrough rather than Activision, it is marked.

All 16 Missions in Order

# Mission Region Official reward
1 Mayhem Hajin, South Korea Cho (operator)
2 Out in the Cold New York "No More Rules" calling card
3 Following Orders North Korea Double XP token
4 Hired Gun Paris Dallas (operator)
5 Losing Ground Hajin, South Korea "Ready Line" loading screen
6 Traffic Paris Luca (operator)
7 Gone Dark Mumbai "Gone Dark" emblem
8 Assassins North Korea Oh-Ji (operator)
9 Survivors North Korea Double XP token
10 Stranded North Korea Kal (operator)
11 Defection North Korea Double Weapon XP token
12 Counter Attack Hajin, South Korea Dunn (operator)
13 Escape North Korea Double Weapon XP token
14 Entrenched North Korea West (operator)
15 Decapitation North Korea Double XP token
16 Greater Good Russia border Park (operator)

Activision says all of these rewards become usable in multiplayer and DMZ after launch. The operators are the headline items; the XP tokens are the filler. If you only care about a specific operator, the table tells you which mission to finish first.

The existing mission order guide covers the achievement tied to each mission. This page is the reward and completionist layer, not a duplicate of that list.

The Rewards Are Front-Loaded and Back-Loaded

Two patterns are worth planning around.

First, four of the first six missions give an operator or a cosmetic: Cho, the "No More Rules" card, Dallas and the "Ready Line" screen. If you want a new look for multiplayer quickly, play the opening act before touching DMZ.

Second, the last four missions give West, a Double XP token, Park and the final story beat. Park is tied to the final reward slot, so it is the last operator in the sequence.

The middle of the campaign is mostly Double XP and Double Weapon XP tokens. Those are useful, but they are also the rewards most likely to be wasted if you are already max level in multiplayer. Use them on a weapon you actually intend to level.

Finish the campaign before a double XP weekend

The campaign's XP tokens are separate from any live-service double XP event. If you are close to a weapon cap, save the token missions for a session where you can play several matches in a row rather than a ten-minute test.

Collectibles: 64 Notes and 26 Crates

IGN's walkthrough counts 64 Collectible Notes and 26 Yellow Supply Crates. The Notes are spread across three missions, while all 26 crates are in Stranded, the open-ended snow map. That distribution matters because Stranded is the one mission where the game gives you a wide area and lets you choose the order.

The crates are not a single linear trail. They are placed around the map, and the walkthrough breaks them down by grid reference. If you are hunting the last few, do it in one session rather than replaying the mission repeatedly; the map is large enough that re-clearing it from the start is the slow path.

The Notes are the easier collectible to miss because they sit in rooms you can pass through during a firefight. Check side rooms, desks and civilian spaces before you trigger the next objective.

Treat collectibles as replayable, not permanently missable

Activision has not published a collectible guide or said that every Note is missable. If you miss one, replaying the mission is the practical fallback. Clear the mission first, then replay it on Recruit if you are only hunting collectibles.

Codes, Safes and Locked Doors

Several missions gate loot behind a code. IGN's walkthrough lists the following (map coordinates in brackets are the walkthrough's reference points, not in-game UI):

Mission Code What it opens
Following Orders 214 Toolbox in the kitchen area
Assassins 5523, 7632, 9103 Three door keypads
Stranded 0024 [644, 158] Container
Stranded 8609 [667, 125] Container
Stranded 0078 [652, 187] Container
Stranded 0600 [646, 158] Container
Stranded 1234 [634, 136] Container
Stranded 6789 [618, 132] Container
Stranded 0330 [631, 127] Bunker
Stranded 0008 [615, 169] Bunker
Escape 8410 Safe

The Following Orders code is not written on a wall. The walkthrough's solution is to search the kitchen's left-hand cabinet for a recipe card; the ingredient quantities give you 2-1-4. The living room's sliding door hides a cabinet with a toolbox. If you are speedrunning the mission, this is the one optional room worth slowing down for.

The Assassins keypads are separate doors, not one three-part code. The walkthrough lists all three codes without mapping each one to a specific door, so note which door you used.

Difficulty Unlocks

Modern Warfare 4 ships with six difficulty options, and two of them are locked at the start:

Difficulty Availability
Recruit From the start
Regular From the start
Hardened From the start
Veteran From the start
Realism Unlocks after completing the campaign on any difficulty
YOLO Unlocks after completing Realism

Realism and YOLO are the completionist tiers. Activision's reward list does not include a difficulty-specific reward, so do not expect an operator for finishing on Veteran. Community guides report an animated YOLO Completer calling card for clearing YOLO, but Activision has not documented that reward; treat it as a community report rather than a promise.

If you are playing for the story, Recruit or Regular is enough. If you want the achievements, check the achievements and trophies guide before you start, because some are tied to specific missions and are easier to get on a first run than on a replay.

How Long the Campaign Takes

The mission count is fixed at 16, but the play time is not. Reviews report roughly six to nine hours, with the low end coming from a focused run and the high end from exploring Stranded and hunting collectibles. The campaign length breakdown explains where the time goes and which missions are the long ones.

Stranded is the outlier. It is an open snow map with three main objectives that can be approached in any order, and the game lets you leave as soon as you have what you need. That design is why the campaign's length varies so much between players: one person finishes the objectives and moves on, another spends an hour opening containers.

Mission Order and Story

The campaign alternates between two perspectives. The Korean storyline follows Private Park and Sierra-1; the Price storyline runs through New York, Paris and Mumbai before rejoining the main arc. The story recap explains who everyone is and what happened in Modern Warfare III, which is useful if this is your first entry in the reboot timeline.

The order in the table is the chronological mission order. There are no branching missions and no alternate endings documented by Activision. The only meaningful choice is how much of Stranded you explore.

What to Do After the Campaign

The operator rewards are the bridge into multiplayer and DMZ. Once the campaign is done:

  1. Equip the operators you unlocked and check their default loadouts.
  2. Use the Double Weapon XP tokens on a weapon you have not leveled.
  3. Try DMZ, where the FOB and trait systems are separate from multiplayer progression.
  4. Check the DMZ beginner guide before your first extraction.

The campaign is the tutorial for the game's gunfeel, but DMZ is where the operator and weapon rewards matter most. Do not burn the tokens in a mode you are about to leave.
