There are nine Mastery Camos in Modern Warfare 4, three per mode. How camo progress carries across multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone.
MW4 Mastery Camo Guide
Modern Warfare 4 ships nine Mastery Camos, split three per mode across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. Camo progress is tracked per weapon and advances across all three modes, but each mode has its own Mastery Camo set and its own precision challenge. Activision has not published the names of any of the nine, or the exact requirement for the final challenge in each track.
The structure is simple once you separate it into layers:
- Nine Mastery Camos total, three for Multiplayer, three for DMZ, three for Warzone.
- Per-weapon camo tracks that unlock along the weapon's level path.
- One completion challenge per mode, unlocked by finishing that mode's camo track.
- No announced names, no announced challenge numbers.
Nine Mastery Camos, three per mode
The headline number is nine, and it comes from three modes multiplied by three camos each. That is a mode-specific split, not one shared set with three color variants. The Multiplayer set is a Multiplayer set, the DMZ set is a DMZ set, and the Warzone set is a Warzone set.
| Mode | Mastery Camos |
|---|---|
| Multiplayer | 3 |
| DMZ | 3 |
| Warzone | 3 |
What that means for planning is that you should decide which mode you actually play before you commit to a grind. Someone who plays nothing but DMZ will not complete the Multiplayer set by accident, no matter how long they stay in Hajin.
The official material describes the camo journey as spanning all three modes, and the per-weapon camo track as the thing that unlocks each mode's precision challenge. The precision challenge is the gate before the Mastery Camo, which is why camo grinding in Modern Warfare 4 is a two-stage process rather than a single counter.
How camo tracks work per weapon
Every weapon has its own camo track. You unlock camo entries as the weapon levels up, sitting alongside the attachment unlocks on the same progression path. The official progression menu shows the weapon's levels, the attachments that unlock at each one, and the weapon camos available along the way. The official weapon guide and the player progression guide both show where camos sit on that track.
Completing the full camo track on a weapon is what opens that mode's mastery challenge for it. That distinction trips people up at the start. Reaching the last weapon level does not hand you a Mastery Camo; it clears the runway so the mastery challenge becomes visible and trackable.
Camo progress itself is not locked to one mode. Progress advances across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, so time spent in any of them moves a weapon's camo track forward. The shared attachment system supports the same idea: an attachment unlocked once is available on every compatible weapon, and if a weapon level would award an attachment you already own, you skip it with a Bonus Level Up. Your time compounds instead of repeating.
Weapon level caps in the Beta build ranged from 30 on the Combat Knife and 34 on the Karit P68 pistol up to 71 on the Kastov 762, 72 on the KG-7 Vulcan and 73 on the Signal .50. The longer the track, the longer the camo grind on that weapon, so a well-planned route picks efficient weapons rather than favorites.

What is confirmed and what is not
This is the section to read before trusting any list you find elsewhere. The official material confirms the count and the structure, and it stops there.
Confirmed:
- Nine Mastery Camos in total.
- Three per mode, across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone.
- Per-weapon camo tracks that unlock along weapon levels.
- A mastery challenge per mode, unlocked by completing that mode's camo track.
Not announced:
- The names of any of the nine Mastery Camos.
- The exact objective for the mastery challenges.
- Whether DMZ mastery progress requires a successful extraction.
- Any release date for additional camo sets.
If a guide lists specific Mastery Camo names for Modern Warfare 4, check its date and source. As of the official pre-launch material, the nine names had not been revealed.
The practical consequence is that you can start the grind now and still not know what you are unlocking. That is normal for a Call of Duty launch cycle. The count and the mode split are stable, and the target moves only if Activision changes the system in a patch.
A practical grinding route
Work one mode at a time. Because the Mastery Camos are mode-specific, splitting your time across all three stretches the completion of every set rather than finishing one.
Level weapons you actually enjoy. Weapon levels, not camo counts, are the real gate, and a 30-level weapon finishes its track far sooner than a 73-level one. If you only care about how many Mastery Camos you finish, the shorter tracks are dramatically cheaper in time.
Use DMZ when you want progress without performance pressure. DMZ XP counts toward your overall progression even on a failed extraction, and it does not count toward your DMZ level when earned in Multiplayer or Warzone, so DMZ is where DMZ progress lives. The DMZ crafting guide covers how to keep a looting run efficient while you carry weapons you are still leveling.
Keep an eye on the shared attachment pool as you grind. Every attachment you unlock on one weapon reduces the work on the next, and the Bonus Level Ups from duplicate unlocks shorten later weapons automatically. The weapons list is the place to check unlock levels before you pick your next gun, and the Apex Attachments guide covers the reward waiting at the end of a finished weapon.

Camo-adjacent rewards that are not Mastery Camos
A few cosmetic rewards look like progress incentives but sit outside the nine Mastery Camos. Knowing the difference stops you chasing the wrong goal.
- The Gilded Pearl Camo Pack is a pre-order reward, not a mastery unlock.
- The Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint is a pre-order blueprint rather than a camo track.
- BlackCell includes exclusive Operator and weapon blueprints plus BlackCell variants of some Battle Pass content.
- The Vault Edition Signature Weapon Collection adds blueprints for the Kastov 762, ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, Oris 8.6 and Combat Knife.
None of those count toward the nine. They are shortcuts to a specific look, while Mastery Camos are earned per weapon per mode and cannot be bought. If your goal is the rarest camo in the game, the only currency that matters is completed camo tracks.
FAQ
How many Mastery Camos are in Modern Warfare 4?
Nine, split three per mode across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone.
Are the Mastery Camo names known yet?
No. Activision has not published the names of any of the nine Mastery Camos, only the count and the mode split.
Can I earn Mastery Camos in DMZ only?
Each mode has its own Mastery Camo set. Playing DMZ progresses camo tracks and unlocks the DMZ mastery challenge, but it does not complete the Multiplayer or Warzone sets for you.
Do camo unlocks carry across modes?
Camo progress advances across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, so time in any mode moves the track forward. What is mode-specific is the mastery challenge and the Mastery Camo at the end of it.
Does camo progress reset with Prestige?
Camo progress is tied to weapon progression, which is a global system separate from the player level track that Prestige resets. See the Prestige and progression guide for the full breakdown.
