Is MW4 on Game Pass at Launch?
No. The official wording is about as clear as this kind of announcement gets: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 as a standalone release and will not be available on Game Pass at launch. The follow-up line removes the usual ambiguity about "launch window" phrasing, stating that players must purchase the game separately to play at launch and that it will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027.
That is a long gap by recent Call of Duty standards: the recent Black Ops titles arrived day one on the service, and this announcement explicitly breaks that pattern. If you were planning to wait for MW4 on Game Pass, the wait now runs into late 2027.

The practical decision is simpler than it looks. Anyone who wants to play in October buys the game, and the only real question is which edition and which storefront. What Game Pass Subscribers Still Get
An active subscription is not useless here, it just does not unlock MW4. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers continue to have access to legacy Call of Duty titles, and Activision names three: Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III. Those remain playable through the service while MW4 stays outside it.
There is one genuine Game Pass benefit for MW4 itself, and it is a discount rather than access. The 10% loyalty discount on the Vault Edition applies if you owned and played a qualifying premium Call of Duty title, and having played one of those titles through an active Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or PC subscription counts. The qualifying list reaches back to Modern Warfare (2019) and covers every mainline release since, including Modern Warfare II and III, Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7.
Two conditions matter: the discount needs the same platform and account that played the qualifying title, it applies only to a Vault Edition bought directly, upgrading from Standard does not qualify, and the offer ends with the October 23 launch.
If you played Modern Warfare III on PlayStation but buy MW4 on Steam, the 10% Vault Edition discount does not transfer. The qualifying title, the pre-order and the account all have to sit on the same platform, and the deadline is launch day rather than the end of the season.
Xbox Play Anywhere and Buying Once
Play Anywhere is the Xbox-side convenience feature, and MW4 supports it on both Xbox Series X and S and on Xbox on PC. A single purchase made through the Xbox store on console or through the Xbox app and Microsoft Store on PC gives you access to the game on the current Xbox platforms, console and PC alike. It is one purchase rather than two, which puts it in a different category from buying on Steam.
That is worth planning around before launch, because Activision has announced no cross-buy for MW4 outside Xbox Play Anywhere. Buying on PlayStation 5 does not get you a PC copy, a Steam purchase does not unlock Battle.net, and the Switch 2 version is its own purchase as well. If you split your play time between a console and a desktop, the Xbox route is the only one that covers both with one transaction.
Digital pre-orders on every platform include Campaign Early Access from October 16 and DMZ Early Access from October 20, plus the Hunter Killer Operator Skin and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, and every digital pre-order adds the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint, which gets an original-green translucent treatment on Xbox consoles. Crossplay and Playing With Friends
Crossplay is confirmed, but the detail is thin. The official line on party tools says you can party up across platforms with crossplay-enabled squads, and the campaign blog frames the pre-launch window as a way to level up solo and then regroup with friends in DMZ Early Access. Nothing published so far describes a platform-by-platform matchmaking matrix, input-based lobby rules, or an opt-out setting.
So the accurate answer for now is: cross-platform squads are confirmed, and everything past that is unannounced. Nobody should be quoting a matchmaking rule for MW4 as fact, because there is no published rule to quote.
If you are deciding where to buy for a group, buy with the people you actually play with. Crossplay solves the party problem for mixed groups, but the platform you purchase on still decides whether you get Play Anywhere, whether you get the loyalty discount, and which store applies to you at all. Switch 2 and the Platforms Not Getting MW4
Nintendo Switch 2 is getting a real version rather than a cloud stream or a port of last generation. Infinity Ward is developing Modern Warfare 4 natively for Switch 2 in partnership with Digital Legends, and Activision describes it as the series returning to a Nintendo platform for the first time in over 13 years.
Two caveats belong next to that. Switch 2 pre-orders were announced for later in the year rather than alongside the other platforms, so the Nintendo store timing has moved separately from the October 23 launch, and the physical Standard Edition on Switch 2 was described as coming to retailers later in the year. Digital pre-orders on Switch 2 do still count for Campaign Early Access, which lists Nintendo Switch 2 among the qualifying platforms.
What is not happening is last-generation support. Activision states plainly that MW4 will not be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. The supported list is Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, PC through Steam and Battle.net, and Nintendo Switch 2.
