Our Modern Warfare 4 review roundup: campaign, multiplayer, DMZ, scores, bugs and whether the 2026 Call of Duty is worth $69.99 on PS5, Xbox or PC.
Modern Warfare 4 Review: Worth It in 2026?
Modern Warfare 4 is the best campaign Infinity Ward has made since the 2019 reboot, a multiplayer package that is solid rather than surprising, and an extraction mode that may end up being the reason people stay. That is the short version. The longer version depends on which mode you actually play, because this is a three-mode release with three different levels of polish and three different reasons to buy or wait.
This review is a launch-window assessment based on the official feature set, the launch patch notes and the published critic scores. It is not a hand-waved "10/10 masterpiece" or a contrarian take. Where critics disagree, the disagreement is in the table. Where Activision has not documented something, the page says so.

Score Roundup
Scores are a useful starting point, not a verdict. Here is where the major outlets landed as of October 24, 2026:
| Outlet | Score | Emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic (PC) | 86 / 100, 18 reviews | Aggregate |
| Metacritic (PS5) | 91 / 100, 9 reviews | Aggregate |
| OpenCritic | 87 top-critic average, 22 reviews | 100% of critics recommend |
| GameSpot | 7 / 10 | Shocking moments, strong ending |
| GameRant | 10 / 10 | "Best Call of Duty since Black Ops 2" |
| IGN | No final score yet | Campaign praised; MP maps and spawns criticized |
The spread is real. GameSpot's 7 and GameRant's 10 are not measuring the same thing: one weighs the whole package against the series' history, the other rewards the campaign's high points. Metacritic's PC and PS5 splits are also based on different review pools, not different games.
IGN's review-in-progress is worth reading for the nuance. It calls the campaign the best Modern Warfare since 2019 while describing the multiplayer as duller than expected, with new maps and modes that do not always justify their gimmicks. IGN had not published a final score when this page was updated, so treat any "IGN score" you see elsewhere as premature.
Campaign: The Best Part, With Caveats
The campaign is the reason to buy at full price if you play alone. It runs 16 missions across the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris and Mumbai, and it switches between two perspectives: Private Park, a rookie South Korean marine, and Captain Price, who is operating outside the chain of command.
The strengths are obvious within the first hour. The set pieces are confident, the pacing is closer to a thriller than a shooting gallery, and the Korean storyline gives the game an emotional anchor that the Price sections do not always have. Stranded, the open snow mission, is the highlight: three objectives, any order, a wide area and a real choice between finishing quickly and exploring. It is the one mission that feels like it learned something from DMZ.
The weaknesses are equally clear. The campaign is short. Reviews report roughly six to nine hours, and the lower end is not an exaggeration if you ignore the collectibles. The Price storyline has the better action beats but the thinner supporting cast; Archer, played by Mads Mikkelsen, is underused. The political framing has drawn criticism from several outlets, and one mission in particular has been compared to "No Russian" for its forced violence. That is a content warning, not a technical flaw, but it is part of the experience.
If you want the full mission list and rewards, the missions and rewards guide has the table. If you want to know how long it takes, the campaign length breakdown is more detailed.
Activision's store listing includes co-op categories for the overall package, but the campaign is built around two single-player perspectives. Do not buy it expecting a documented split-screen campaign.
Multiplayer: Familiar, Solid, Occasionally Dull
Multiplayer is the hardest part to recommend unconditionally. The gunplay is good, the movement is heavier and more deliberate than Black Ops 7, and the removal of hipfire bloom makes close-range fights feel more readable. The launch package is large: 20 maps, 33 weapons, more than 12 modes, 17 killstreaks and 33 operators.
The new ideas are hit and miss. Kill Block is the most interesting: a modular training-center map that rearranges its layout between rounds, with more than 500 documented configurations. It gives every match a different set of sightlines, which is more than most new Call of Duty maps attempt. Ground War: Combat Outpost scales the formula up to 64 players. Collateral is a round-based mode with weapon purchases, and Gunfight returns with its own map pool.
The criticism is not that the multiplayer is broken. It is that most of the new maps are ordinary. IGN's review-in-progress specifically calls out awkward spawns and a lack of imagination in the new map and mode designs. If you have played a Modern Warfare game in the last five years, you will recognize the rhythm immediately. That is comfort food for some players and a reason to skip for others.
The launch patch notes show the mode shipped with the usual fixes: a broken Portable Radar in Free For All, an invisible collision issue near the Summit barracks, and a Prestige-related lockout for military camos and Apex attachments. Those are fixed. The multiplayer maps list and the best weapons and loadouts guide are the practical companions.
DMZ: The Reason to Stay
DMZ is the mode that has generated the most positive coverage, and it is easy to see why. It replaces the Zombies mode from Modern Warfare III with an extraction shooter set in and around Hajin. Twenty squads of up to three players enter the exclusion zone, complete story missions and dynamic operations, then call for extraction. The FOB is the hub: you upgrade weapons, craft gear, check boss intel and invest in operator trait trees.
The systems are deeper than a side mode. Dynamic weather changes the map during a match, with rain and snow intensifying as the round goes on. The trait trees support different playstyles: more loot, faster revives, reduced explosive damage. The FOB gives you a reason to extract beyond survival, which is the difference between a novelty and a mode you keep playing.
It is also the buggiest mode at launch. The official patch notes list fixes for Lieutenant intel tracking, FOB challenge tracking, Bounty tracking, Lieutenant Hunt progress bleeding between squads, a hostage-carry animation, a stuck enemy helicopter in the "Fallout" mission and missing bullet audio. The known-issues list still flags enemy AI vehicles that can drive without a driver or get stuck; Infinity Ward says a partial fix has shipped. None of these are game-breaking on the level of a save corruption, but they are the kind of bugs that cost you a run.
The DMZ beginner guide covers the first extraction, and the FOB guide explains the upgrade path. If you bounce off DMZ, it will probably be because of the bugs or the pacing, not the concept.
Campaign vs. Modern Warfare III
The comparison matters because Modern Warfare III's campaign was widely seen as the low point of the reboot. It reused multiplayer maps for its open missions and shipped with a short, disjointed story. Modern Warfare 4 does not repeat that mistake. The missions are built for the campaign, the set pieces are staged, and the Korean storyline gives the game a point of view.
The multiplayer comparison is less flattering. Modern Warfare III's multiplayer was faster and more arcade-like; Modern Warfare 4 slows the pace and adds weight. Whether that is an improvement depends on what you want from Call of Duty. If you are coming from Modern Warfare III, the story recap covers the continuity and the release and platform guide covers what changed between the two launches.
DMZ is the clearest upgrade. Replacing Zombies with an extraction mode gives the game a third pillar that can stand on its own, even with launch bugs.
Technical State and Platforms
The launch build is playable, but it is a launch build. The October 23 patch fixed crashes across modes, camo unlock display errors, a DMZ challenge that described a headshot as a longshot, a killstreak indicator that carried over from the previous match, and several UI issues. The known-issues list is public on Activision's Trello board, which is more transparency than the series has offered in some years.
On PC, the game requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, and the system requirements guide explains what to check before you buy. The PC version was co-developed by Beenox and supports the expected controller and crossplay features. The Switch 2 version is handled by Digital Legends; it is a real port, not a cloud stream, but it is also the version with the least independent performance coverage at launch.
The game is not on PS4 or Xbox One, and it is not on Game Pass until Holiday 2027. Those are platform decisions, not review complaints, but they change the value calculation for anyone with an older console.
Should You Buy It?
Buy it now if:
- You play Call of Duty for the campaign and want the best one since 2019.
- You have a group for DMZ and want a new extraction game to learn together.
- You are on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC or Switch 2 and have not bought a Call of Duty in a couple of years.
Wait if:
- You only play competitive multiplayer and are happy with Black Ops 7.
- You are on PS4 or Xbox One; there is no version for you.
- You want Game Pass; the earliest window is Holiday 2027.
- You are sensitive to graphic violence in a political setting; the campaign earns its content warning.
At $69.99, the campaign alone is a six-to-nine-hour purchase. DMZ is what makes the package worth keeping installed. Multiplayer is the bonus, not the headline, unless you are already deep into the series' competitive loop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Modern Warfare 4 worth buying? For campaign and DMZ players, yes. For competitive-only players who already own Black Ops 7, the multiplayer is familiar enough that waiting for a sale is reasonable.
How long is the campaign? Reviews report roughly six to nine hours across 16 missions. Your time depends on how much of Stranded you explore and whether you hunt collectibles.
Is DMZ good? It is the best-received mode in the package, with deeper progression than a side mode. It also has the most launch bugs, particularly around AI vehicles and tracking.
Does Modern Warfare 4 have a final IGN score? Not as of October 24, 2026. IGN published a review-in-progress and said the final score would come later.
Is it better than Modern Warfare III? The campaign is significantly better. The multiplayer is slower and heavier, which is a matter of taste. DMZ is a more substantial third mode than Zombies.
Is it on Game Pass? Not at launch. Activision says it joins in Holiday 2027.
