Modern Warfare 4 has no Zombies mode. Here is what replaced it, what the official launch modes are, and whether a Zombies playlist could still arrive.
Does Modern Warfare 4 Have Zombies? The Mode Is Missing at Launch
No - Modern Warfare 4 does not have a Zombies mode. The game launched on 23 October 2026 with three pillars: a 16-mission campaign, competitive multiplayer and DMZ. There is no round-based Zombies playlist, no open-world Zombies map, and no Zombies-specific progression track in the launch build.
That answer is short, but the reason behind it matters for anyone hoping the mode will be patched in later. This page covers what is actually in the game, which mode took Zombies' place, and what would have to change before a Zombies announcement became credible.
- No Zombies at launch - not in the mode list, not on the main menu, not in the files
- DMZ is the third pillar - the extraction mode replaced the Zombies slot from Modern Warfare III
- No Zombies announcement from Activision - the official pre-order post lists campaign, multiplayer and DMZ only
- Season 1 starts 6 November 2026 - the first realistic window for any unannounced mode
- Infected and Possession are the Halloween modes - official posts name those, not Zombies

Official source: the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 pre-order and editions post describes the game as campaign, multiplayer and DMZ. The Steam listing lists the same three modes and does not mention Zombies.
What modes does Modern Warfare 4 actually have?
The launch package is unusually easy to describe because Activision has repeated the same three-part structure in every storefront and blog post. Campaign is the story mode. Multiplayer is the competitive suite, with 16 modes and 12 six-versus-six maps at launch. DMZ is the extraction mode set in Hajin, with faction contracts, a forward operating base and Active Duty slots.
| Mode | Status at launch | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Included | 16 missions across Korea, New York, Paris, Mumbai and the Russian border |
| Multiplayer | Included | 16 modes, 12 core maps, Ground War and Kill Block |
| DMZ | Included | Extraction mode with FOB upgrades and faction contracts |
| Zombies | Not included | No playlist, map or progression |
| Spec Ops | Not included | No co-op survival mode at launch |
The absence is not a menu glitch or a pre-order restriction. There is no Zombies tile to unlock, and no platform gets a different mode list. PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net and Switch 2 all receive the same three pillars.
Why is there no Zombies mode?
Modern Warfare III shipped with an open-world Zombies mode built on the DMZ map framework, and that mode carried its own story, contracts and extraction loop. Modern Warfare 4 does not continue it. The most direct explanation is structural: DMZ already occupies the extraction sandbox that Zombies was using, and the new DMZ is a full launch pillar rather than a side mode.
Our Modern Warfare 4 review describes the trade plainly: DMZ replaces the Zombies mode from Modern Warfare III. That is a description of the shipped product, not an official statement that Zombies was cancelled. Activision has not published a post explaining the decision, so the internal reasoning remains not officially confirmed.
What is official is the content split. The pre-order post, the storefront descriptions and the launch patch notes all talk about campaign, multiplayer and DMZ. None of them mentions a Zombies map, a Zombies storyline, or a Zombies-specific bundle.
Did dataminers find Zombies content?
No credible Zombies content has been shown from the launch build. Claims about a hidden Zombies map usually rely on one of three things: a string from a previous Call of Duty title, a reused asset name, or a creator reading the mode list incorrectly. None of those is evidence of a playable mode.

The safer rule is to treat any Zombies video without a menu capture, a gameplay session and a version number as speculation. The launch build has been public since 23 October, and a full mode cannot stay hidden for long once millions of players have installed it.
A creator saying a mode is "coming back" is not a source. Check the official Call of Duty blog or the in-game playlist update before treating a Zombies claim as real.
What are the Halloween modes instead?
Activision's launch communication points to Infected and Possession as the Halloween content for the coming week. Those are multiplayer variants, not Zombies. Infected turns eliminated players into attackers, while Possession is a mode built around a contested objective. Both fit the seasonal playlist slot that a Zombies event would otherwise occupy.
That matters because the Halloween window is the one time of year when a surprise Zombies drop would be easiest to market. If Activision were sitting on a Zombies mode, this is when it would appear. The official posts name Infected and Possession instead, which is the clearest signal that no Zombies event is planned for the launch season.
Could Zombies be added in Season 1?
Season 1 begins on 6 November 2026, and it is the first realistic window for a new mode. A season update can add playlists, maps and progression systems without a full title update, so a Zombies playlist is technically possible. It is also not teased anywhere in the official Season 1 material.
The distinction matters for how you spend money. A Zombies mode would not require a separate purchase in the current Call of Duty structure, so there is no bundle to buy in anticipation. If it arrives, it arrives as an update. If it does not, no purchase decision changes.
Activision has not said "no Zombies forever". It has shipped a game without Zombies and has not announced one. Treat the mode as absent until an official post says otherwise.
What should Zombies fans play instead?
DMZ is the closest thing in the package. It has AI enemies, a risk-and-reward loop and a large map, but it is not a survival mode. The DMZ beginner guide covers the deployment flow, the FOB and the contract types, and it is the right starting point if you are coming from Zombies and want a PvE-first loop.
Competitive players who mainly want chaotic cooperative play should look at the co-op-style modes in the multiplayer mode list. Ground War and Kill Block are not Zombies, but they offer the large-scale fights that the old open-world mode used to provide.
If you want a literal Zombies experience, the previous title still has it. Modern Warfare III's Zombies remains playable, and nothing in Modern Warfare 4 removes access to it. That is the honest recommendation for a dedicated Zombies player: keep the older install for that mode and treat Modern Warfare 4 as a multiplayer and DMZ purchase.
Will Zombies ever come to Modern Warfare 4?
The only defensible answer is not officially confirmed. There is no announcement, no store listing, no rated content and no credible leak. The game has a three-mode structure, a Season 1 date and a Halloween slot that is already assigned to other modes.
A future Zombies mode would also need a map, a progression track and a reason to exist alongside DMZ. That is a full production effort, not a playlist toggle. For now, the mode is absent, and the pages that claim otherwise are guessing.
