The best MW4 guns by engagement range, from the ISO Nightshade up to the Signal .50, with the Apex Attachment that changes each pick.
Modern Warfare 4 best guns: the range-first ranking
The short answer: the best all-round gun in Modern Warfare 4 is the M4, because it is the only assault rifle that is fully automatic, available at player rank 9 and described by Infinity Ward as highly adaptable. For close range the ISO Nightshade is the strongest starting pick, and for long range the KG-7 Vulcan is the most forgiving sniper. Everything else depends on the range you actually fight at.
That is a role ranking, not a time-to-kill ranking. Activision has not published damage, RPM, ADS speed or recoil values for MW4, so any list with precise stat numbers is inventing them. This page ranks by what each weapon is built to do, using the official class descriptions and the Apex Attachment each gun gets.

The ranking at a glance
| Rank | Weapon | Class | Range | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | M4 | AR | 15–40 m | Fully automatic, adaptable, unlocks at rank 9 |
| 2 | ISO Nightshade | SMG | 0–15 m | Available immediately, best early aggressive pick |
| 3 | KG-7 Vulcan | Sniper | 40 m+ | Available immediately, most forgiving scope |
| 4 | Han 86 | AR | 15–40 m | Default AR, high rate of fire, 20mm airburst Apex |
| 5 | PPSh-41 | SMG | 0–15 m | Rank 11, huge magazine, area-denial Apex |
| 6 | Kastov 762 | AR | 20–45 m | Hard-hitting 7.62, best for trigger discipline |
| 7 | MAR-9 | Marksman | 40 m+ | Immediate unlock, converts to full auto |
| 8 | Signal .50 | Sniper | 50 m+ | Rank 30, incendiary rounds hit vehicles and streaks |
If you only read one line: M4 for most players, ISO Nightshade if you rush, KG-7 Vulcan if you hold long lanes.
Close range (0–15 m)
ISO Nightshade is the pick. It is unlocked from the first match, it is a genuine SMG rather than a converted rifle, and its Apex Attachment — ISO Trace — tags targets with RFID ammunition and tracks their movement on the optic. That is information you cannot buy anywhere else in the class.
PPSh-41 is the alternative at rank 11. The official description points to a large magazine and a high fire rate, and its Ember Apex adds an underbarrel pyrotechnic launcher that creates burning area denial. In objective modes that matters more than a slightly cleaner recoil pattern.
Rezi 12 is the shotgun exception. It is available immediately and its Enforcer Apex converts it to pump action with a side-saddle of explosive slugs, which turns a room-clearing tool into a single-shot problem solver. It is not a primary for open maps.
The 12 launch 6v6 maps include tight interiors and long sightlines. If you find yourself losing every close fight, the fix is usually the ISO Nightshade, not more attachments on your rifle.
Mid range (15–40 m)
M4 wins by default and by design. Rank 9 is early, the class description calls it highly adaptable, and it has no obvious weakness at the range where most 6v6 fights happen. Its Hurricane Apex converts it to 5.7x28 with a top-mounted P90-style magazine, which pushes it toward SMG handling at the cost of rifle reach.
Han 86 is the other default. It is available immediately, chambered in 5.56, and built around a high rate of fire with moderate damage. Its X20 Skybreaker Apex adds a targeting optic and a 20mm airburst launcher for flushing cover — the single most useful utility attachment on any AR.
Kastov 762 is the skill pick. 7.62x39 gives heavy per-shot impact and equally firm recoil, so it rewards burst discipline and punishes full-auto spraying. The Kastov ARC Apex adds an RF pulse that disrupts enemy streaks and vehicles, which is a support tool rather than a duelling upgrade.
Patriot XMR is technically a battle rifle, and it belongs in this bracket if you like holding angles. It hits hard at mid to long range when braced, and its Volt Apex fires non-lethal 50,000V darts from the underbarrel.
Long range (40 m+)
KG-7 Vulcan is the best sniper for most players because it is available from the start and its Apex — Drillcharge — is a utility tool rather than a conversion. You are not giving up the sniper role to use it.
Signal .50 is the upgraded pick at rank 30. Its Inferno Apex loads .50 cal incendiary rounds with a large bonus against vehicles and killstreaks, which makes it the best anti-streak weapon in the game on paper.
MAR-9 is the marksman rifle that behaves like an AR after its Apex. The Auto variant is a fully automatic Bruen conversion with a much higher rate of fire, so it covers the 40-metre bracket without forcing a scope.
Oris 8.6 is the odd one out: its Razor Apex mounts a blade module with deployable kunai. It is a duelling marksman rifle, not a lane-holding one.
Best guns for a fresh account
New players should not chase the meta. These are the strongest weapons available at player rank 1:
- ISO Nightshade — SMG, immediate.
- Han 86 — AR, immediate.
- Rezi 12 — shotgun, immediate.
- MAR-9 — marksman, immediate.
- KG-7 Vulcan — sniper, immediate.
- FiNN LMG — LMG, immediate.
That is one weapon per role before you unlock Create-a-Class properly. The weapons list has the full unlock order and weapon levels.
The attachments that change the ranking
Apex Attachments are not minor tuning. A few genuinely move a weapon into a different role:
- M4 Hurricane — 5.7x28 top-fed conversion, closer to an SMG.
- Hyeon Hyperburst — overclocked burst that falls into slow auto.
- Kastov ARC — RF pulse that disrupts streaks and vehicles.
- ISO Trace — RFID tagging and target tracking.
- Rezi Enforcer — pump action with explosive slugs.
- MAR-9 Auto — full-auto Bruen variant.
- Signal Inferno — incendiary .50 rounds with vehicle bonus.
The Apex Attachments guide covers unlock levels and trade-offs. Gunny builds are a good starting point, but they only use attachments you already own, so a "best" build on a fresh account is mostly a range choice.
What would change this ranking
Two things:
- A balance patch. The October 23 notes said the team was "looking at potential weapon tuning for next week", then softened it to "a future update". No documented damage or recoil change has shipped, so beta-era impressions still roughly hold.
- Season 1 content. New weapons and Apex Attachments will arrive with the season, and the launch pool is only 33 guns.
Until either lands, the range-first order above is the most defensible answer available without official stats.
